“There ain’t no cure for the summer time blues.” – Eddie Cochran
I don’t think Eddie Cochran had the beach in mind when he wrote this summer anthem, but on a day like today I feel like the only way to beat the heat is to head to the deep blue sea. New York is an island after all, and out past the concrete towers are miles of sand and surf, 118 miles of it out on Long Island. What you might not know is that Long Island features some of the best surfing on the east coast. Last year Quicksilver hosted the first ASP world tour pro surf competition right here in New York. Spots like Gilgo Beach and Ditch Plains have hosted local gatherings since the 1960′s and been featured in surfing documentaries like The Endless Summer.
The summer isn’t over yet, and it’s not too late to pack up your swim trunks and head east to the Rockaways and beyond. Smith+Butler carries Birdwell and Saltbox swimwear in a variety of cuts and colors, as well as gear from Handsome Supply Co. and It’s not everyday that you can make it out to the water, but you can enjoy the surf from the comfort of home. Sight Sound, a High Seas Film production is available at S+B on dvd, as well as Picaresque. Or you can pick up the latest issue of Surfer’s Journal and prepare your for your own surf adventure. Whatever the case, maybe now is the best time to catch some summer time blues.
